Preserving Urbana: Opposing Data Centers

THE PROPOSAL

The proposed Urbana Data Center represents a significant industrial transformation that threatens our community's character and ecological stability.

Beyond the immediate construction impact, our primary concerns focus on the massive energy footprint and the potential strain on local water resources. We advocate for a sustainable development model that preserves Urbana's historical heritage and ensures the long-term well-being of its residents, rather than prioritizing industrial expansion at any cost.

Myth vs. Fact About the Data Center

Understand the critical distinctions between marketing promises and the long-term realities for Urbana’s community and landscape.

Common Myth

Economic Savior: Promises of thousands of local jobs and a significant reduction in Urbana residential taxes.

Verified Fact

Abatement Trap: Most data center roles are highly specialized and often filled by out-of-state contractors. Post-construction, these facilities typically require fewer than 30 permanent staff, while large tax abatements often divert revenue away from local schools.

Common Myth

Clean Tech: Claims of zero environmental impact and full compatibility with local agricultural character.

Verified Fact

Resource Intensity: Cooling systems consume millions of gallons of water daily, stressing aquifers. Furthermore, permanent construction on prime farmland removes soil from production forever, fundamentally altering Urbana's agricultural future.

Common Myth

Quiet Operations: Quiet, low-impact facilities that do not alter current traffic flow or residential peace.

Verified Fact

Operational Nuisance: Industrial-scale cooling fans run 24/7, creating a constant low-frequency hum audible to nearby residents. Frequencies are harmful to livestock. Maintenance and service vehicles significantly increase heavy traffic on narrow residential and rural roads.

Informing the Community: FAQs

Has city government known about this potential project?

Local government leaders have a responsibility to be fully transparent about timelines, negotiations, and the scope of any potential data center project. Clear, timely communication builds public trust, allows residents and businesses to make informed decisions, and ensures meaningful community input before irreversible commitments are made. When transparency is lacking, confidence in leadership and the integrity of the process is inevitably weakened.

Will the project strain Urbana's water reserves?

Large-scale data centers often utilize evaporative cooling systems that require millions of gallons of water daily. This creates significant pressure on local aquifers, potentially affecting long-term water availability for residents and agriculture. This project has potential to permanently damage Cedar Bog Nature Preserve.

How does this affect our local power grid?

The energy demand of a single data center can equal that of thousands of homes. This massive draw often necessitates new substations and transmission lines, which may lead to increased infrastructure costs passed on to local utility payers.

What job growth can we actually expect?

While construction brings temporary work, long-term operations typically require very few employees (often fewer than 30 for a large site). This is significantly lower employment density than industrial or commercial alternatives. Do not expect local contractors to be awarded any work.

How are property values influenced by this?

Proximity to industrial-scale data centers and their associated noise and visual impact often leads to lower residential desirability. Studies have shown that industrial zoning expansions near residential hubs can negatively affect resale rates.

How can I effectively voice my concerns?

Participation in Urbana City Council and Planning Commission meetings is vital. We also encourage you to sign the formal petition to ensure our collective voice is heard before local government.

Community Voices

I don’t want the data center here polluting our water, sucking our resources dry and being a stain on our community. Don’t get lured into the short sighted benefits that data centers offer.

Abigail

Urbana resident here! We believe our town deserves growth that supports residents, protects our environment, and preserves the quality of life we value. We urge local leaders to reject this proposal. I am thinking of my future alongside my children.

Kindra

"Protecting our children's future means preserving the character of our town. Industrial sprawl is not the answer."

Linda

These facilities are designed to serve corporate interests, not the people who actually live here. Champaign County should not be treated as a dumping ground for industrial‑scale tech operations that provide minimal jobs while leaving us with the environmental and financial consequences.

I frequent areas like Cedar Bog, which is a priceless ecological resource. We need to protect this area from any potential industrial influence - once it’s impacted, we cannot run the clock back to reverse the impact a data center has on its rare plants and animals. Please make choices that will preserve this gem for our children’s children.

Jessica

City leaders - please step up and represent your constituents' and neighbors' wishes on this matter.
